چکیده

Carboxylic acid dimers serve as prototypical systems for modeling the unusual spectral behavior of the hydride stretch fundamental. Large anharmonic effects associated with the pair of cooperatively strengthened OH ̄OvC hydrogen bonds produces complicated infrared spectra in which the OH stretch oscillator strength is spread over hundreds of wave numbers, resulting in a complicated band sub-structure. In this work cubic anharmonic constants are computed along internal coordinates associated with the intramolecular OH stretch, intermolecular stretch, and OH bend internal coordinates for the formic acid and benzoic acid dimers. These are then projected onto the normal coordinates to produce mixed states that are used in computing the OH stretch infrared spectrum. For the benzoic acid dimer the calculations accurately reproduce for three deuterated isotopomers the overall breadth and much of the vibrational sub-structure in the observed spectra. For the formic acid dimer, the spectrum is calculated using a model employing a subset of the cubic force constants as well as using the full cubic force field. The spectra calculated for the formic acid dimer are sparser and somewhat more sensitive to the exact positions of the anharmonically coupled states than that of the benzoic acid dimer. Again semiquantitative agreement with experiment is obtained. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1530573#

Origin of the 900 cm(-1) broad double-hump OH vibrational feature of strongly hydrogen-bonded carboxylic acids.

Medium and strong hydrogen bonds are common in biological systems. Here, they provide structural support and can act as proton transfer relays to drive electron and/or energy transfer. Infrared spectroscopy is a sensitive probe of molecular structure and hydrogen bond strength but strongly hydrogen-bonded structures often exhibit very broad and complex vibrational bands. As an example, strong h...

Vibrational dynamics of the hydrogen bond in H(2)S-HF: Fourier-transform-infrared spectra and ab initio theory.

The rotationally resolved infrared spectrum of the hydrogen bonded complex H(2)S-HF and of its isotopomer D(2)S-DF in the HF/DF stretching range have been observed in a supersonic jet Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) experiment and indicate a predissociation lifetime of 130 ps for H(2)S-HF. Complementary spectra taken at a temperature of 190 K in a cell without resolved rotational structure in...

Probing intermolecular couplings in liquid water with two-dimensional infrared photon echo spectroscopy.

Two-dimensional infrared photon echo and pump probe studies of the OH stretch vibration provide a sensitive probe of the correlations and couplings in the hydrogen bond network of liquid water. The nonlinear response is simulated using numerical integration of the Schrodinger equation with a Hamiltonian constructed to explicitly treat intermolecular coupling and nonadiabatic effects in the high...

A first-principles model of Fermi resonance in the alkyl CH stretch region: application to hydronaphthalenes, indanes, and cyclohexane.

The infrared (IR) spectroscopy of the alkyl CH stretch region (2750-3000 cm(-1)) of a series of bicyclic hydrocarbons and free radicals has been studied under supersonic expansion cooling in the gas phase, and compared with a theoretical model that describes the local mode stretch-bend Fermi resonance interactions. The double resonance method of fluorescence-dip infrared (FDIR) spectroscopy was...
